The 2007 Dixons Creek/Steels Creek Wine Show was held over Melba Festival weekend (23-25 March 07) at the Berry Café, 1925 Melba Highway, Dixons Creek VIC 3775. The Berry Café is located approximately 10 km north of Yarra Glen on the Melba Highway (B300) (see map) The area for participation was expanded this year, as were the classes available for judging and tasting. Wineries from the Yering, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, and Steels Creek area were eligible to participate. We had another year of excellent wines for enjoyment. Proceeds from the 2007 show will be donated to both the Yarra Glen and Dixons Creek CFA units. Wines were entered in 11 classes, however, because of the number of entries "Best of Class" wines were judged in three groups: whites, cab sauvs, and other reds. Thirty-five local wines were featured and judged by Matt Aldridge and Reon Vuglar. Best of Show was awarded to Panther’s Paw 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, with other Silver Medals given to Sticks 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, Sutherland Estate 2003 DHV Shiraz, and Cooinda Estate 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon. Full details of the awards are given in the Awards page link above. Details on the donation to the Fire Brigades will be posated after the accounts are settled. Thank you to all who participated in the show, both tasters and wineries showcasing their wares. The 2006 Inaugural Wine Show offered judging of 5 classes of wine. In addition, there was a chance for visitors to taste and vote for their favorite wine, culminating in a People's Choice award for the wine in each class voted most popular by the public tasters. Tasters had the opportunity to go on the mailing list of wines they liked. There was a fee to enter the people’s choice award with any proceeds from the show being donated to the Dixons Creek CFA.
There were 47 local wines available for tasting. The judge found the quality to be decent, as there were 24 award-quality wines found. Of the 47 entries, there were 2 of gold medal quality, 5 silver medal wines, and 17 bronze medal wines. Presentation of awards took place at 3pm Monday 17th April 2006. Full 2006 results are now posted on this web site. Entries were from grapes grown in the Dixons Creek/Steels Creek environs (within 6 km of the corner of the Melba Highway and Pinnacle Lane). Thank you for joining us for the tasting fun and adventure.
Our thanks go to the participating wineries and lay judges; the show was able to present a cheque for $648.77 to the Dixons Creek CFA. Accepting the donation for the CFA were (L-R) John Canning, Jim Noonan and Graeme Miller. (Also pictured are Martine Smith and Athel Smith of the Berry Café.) We have posted a list of wineries participating in the Inaugural show.
