ARTIST PROFILE

artist's portrait

As a visual artist my philosophy is to simplify events and themes that on a daily basis can appear complex. By simplifying the subject it clarifies the original meaning.

The subjects I paint have an underlying message, that is, an expression of my love of movement and richness of color.

My interest in dark v light, monochromatic v full color, "big picture" overviews on a landscape, movement of figures and light influences my work.

I work in two genres: Portraiture and Landscapes.

My portraits embrace two main elements; light v dark and movement. They are not painted from a social or political perspective but are an observation of the essence of joy and uninhibited movement. People's movements & dark v light are something I find appealing (a darker skin tone against light clothing); this is why I mainly paint in a monochromatic style with portraits, simplifying an often-complex scene.

My Landscapes are different to my portraits in that I utilize a more complex layering of paint. I like to represent the changing light at different times of day and "big picture" views of a subject whilst still expressing a sense of movement.

I take my inspiration from everyday subjects: a sunset giving it's last light, surrendering unique colors and dramatic shadows ... A group of children jumping with unadulterated joy, giving a fleeting glimpse of an unusual movement that is so hard to remember and which passes on a fleeting feeling of such happiness.

To me movement implies so many things. An energy and freedom that is so hard to capture.

My processes include sketching ideas to paper then transferring to canvas. Then my favorite part, painting. Utilising a variety of techniques and mediums. I splatter, spray, throw and finger paint. Use Japanese and Western brushes. Diluted tar, acrylic, oil and even wax. Pencils find their way in occasionally as well as charcoal ... Layer upon layer, fast and quick to get the effect I crave.
