Significant Local Projects
The Township Group May 2011 Bulletin has a description of 13 community projects underway or recently completed. Yarra Glen Needs AnalysisIn February, Council held a community meeting to discuss perseived needs and build on the Visions and Values Study of 2005. On Tuesday 12 April 2011, Council endorsed the Yarra Glen Community Services Needs Analysis Report, Social and Demographic Data Report and Implementation Statement. As indicated at the community consultation session, all participants will now receive a copy of the Community Services Needs Analysis Report and the Implementation Statement. Embrace Our Streets ProjectCouncil has employed Village Well, a consulting firm, to interview residents and business owners to define positives and negatives about Yarra Glen. They will be on the streets as well as 3 sessions at the Memorial Hall and the Racecourse. A Business Workshop will be held on Monday, 7 May at 6:30pm to gather information from a business perspective. Community Workshops will be held on Sunday, 13 May from 9-11am at the Racecourse and Monday 14 May at 6:30pm to gather information from a business perspective. 1 May 2012 Yarra Glen Memorial HallCouncil agenda discussion at their 10 August 2010 meeting with respect to the Community Hub in Yarra Glen is available from the SYR Web Site as a PDF document. Community activities starting at 5pm.. 6 Dec 2011 McKenzie ReserveThere is a lot going on in the McKenzie Reserve area, with the playground, men's shed, memorial hall upgrade, bowls club addition, and more. A concept diagram shows how all this fits together. It was available for comment until Friday, March 4th, 2011. 23 Feb 2011 Yarra Valley Railway Station RestorationA significant upgrade to the Yarra Valley Railway Station precinct is planned through various grants and public participation. A public meeting was held to discuss plans the the railway precinct - and how community residents can participate and help. Thursday, June 9th, 8PM, at the Uniting Church Hall. YVR VP Brett Whelan gave a presentation on the progress made in replacing track and repairing facilities, as well as their plans for a 3-stage development from Yarra Glen towards Healesville. Over 100 people attended the meeting, and the plans were applauded by the crowd. Visit the Yarra Valley Tourist Railway Society for more information. 11 June 2011 Yarra Glen & District Men's ShedA working group of area residents is proposing erection of a "Men's Shed" adjacent to the Gary Cooper Pavilion in the McKenzie Reserve in Yarra Glen. Thjings have stalled while the Shire and the Yarra Glen community discuss a suitable location/facility for the project. They are seeking funding for a facility. The Yarra Ranges Council has scheduled a Community Meeting for Wednesday, 3 August 2011 to discuss the siting options for the Mens' Shed and to receive community feedback. You can view the notice of public meeting mailed to the local residents. 29 July 2011 McKenzie Reserve PlaygroundA significant addition to the McKenzie Reserve is planned through $540,000 in grants. A concept document lists the proposed works and a diagram of proposed works from December 2010 are available. Comments on the plan are to be received until 28 February 2011, and if no significant changes are made, construction is envisioned to start in July 2011 and last 3 months. Visit the Shire web site to review it and make comments. 16 Feb 2011 Yarra Glen Truck By-PassThe Yarra Glen Truck Bypass is a $15 million project providing a new 1.4km road link east of the Yarra Glen township as an alternative route to divert truck traffic away from the town centre. The signed bypass route extends from the Melba Highway (Bell Street)/Healesville-Yarra Glen Road intersection south of Yarra Glen, then runs north from Healesville-Yarra Glen Road via a new road link, reconnecting with the Melba Highway at Old Healesville Road. Intersection improvements, route signing and the new road two-way road link will encourage Melba Highway truck traffic away from the town centre. The bypass opened in May 2010. Some ongoing works including construction of the Bell Street roundabout, and intersection improvements at Armstrong Grove/Healesville-Yarra Glen Road will continue until early-mid 2011. The project is jointly funded between the State Government, Australian Government and Shire of Yarra Ranges. Project details from the VicRoads web site. VicRoads October 2010 Project Update. Report on a meeting with VicRoads on 29 May 2008 is now available. At a 23 February 2011 briefing, a plan for the Melba Hwy-Bell Street Roundabout was made available. It shows the details and landscaping plan for the roundabout. The signage strategy was also distributed. VicRoads in consultation with the Yarra Ranges Council has developed a landscaping design that complements the surrounding area while maintaining high road safety standards. The plans are now available to view at the Yarra Glen Truck Bypass project board outside the maternal health centre on Bell Street. The plans will available to view until mid-November 2011.
